From the Washington Times: “Obama blames Founding Fathers’ ‘structural’ design of Congress for gridlock.”
President Obama is taking a swipe at the Founding Fathers, blaming his inability to move his agenda on the “disadvantage” of having each state represented equally in the Senate.
At a Democratic fundraiser in Chicago Thursday night, Mr. Obama told a small group of wealthy supporters that there are several hurdles to keeping Democrats in control of the Senate and recapturing the House. One of those problems, he said, is the apportionment of two Senate seats to each state regardless of population.
“Obviously, the nature of the Senate means that California has the same number of Senate seats as Wyoming. That puts us at a disadvantage,” Mr. Obama said,
Why, yes, Mr. President… that was the whole point: Congress was intentionally designed to restrain men blinded by a lust for power, and far too enamored with their own “goodness and rightness”—to slow them down from tyrannical behavior. The 17th Amendment was a colossal error, in beginning to destroy the brilliance of the system the Founder’s gave us, and I pray to God you are restrained from doing any further damage. Freedom means allowing people to work out their own vision of how things should be—and that concept made America the envy of the world. Yes, some people suffered from the foolishness of their ideas, but everyone had the opportunity to learn from those failures, and we were all better off for it. When you enact a one-size-fits-all system from DC, you condemn the nation to universal suffering when your ideas are proved bankrupt. Stop the tyranny!!! Let freedom ring!! It’s clear you believe that if only everyone was forced to follow your beliefs, the world would be a better place. But look around in history… your ideas have been tried and brought immeasurable suffering, poverty, and death in nation after nation after nation. Freedom brought prosperity to a broader segment of a nation’s population than at any time before—it made us the envy of the world, and people risked their lives to come here and experience it. Stop aiming to destroy what made that true! Just stop it! We need to make DC largely irrelevant to daily life. It’s killing us.
